MVP: Most Valuable Pitcher?

Should pitchers be allowed to win the MVP award?

Many people believe that pitchers should not be able to receive the MVP award because they have the CY Young award. The MVP should be left to the other nine positions (including DH). Since 1956, only nine pitchers have had the honor to be named MVP.

MVP stands for most valuable player. Why can't a pitcher be a team's most valuable player?

I bring this topic up because on November 13th, MLB will announce who the MVPs were for the 2014 season. It is hard to argue against giving the award to Clayton Kershaw. The only NL player that was playing well enough to steal the award from him was Giancarlo Stanton, but he was injured with a month left to play and Kershaw was still rolling. Yes, I'm aware Kershaw was hurt early in the season however I believe Kershaw's injury early in the season means less than Stanton's injury late in the season. That is my opinion.
My argument for Clayton Kershaw to win the MVP award begins with what could be the best month for a pitcher in MLB history.

During the month of June, Clayton Kershaw was dominant. The batters he faced struggled to get on base, and when he was on the mound, it was nearly impossible for the Dodgers to lose. I'd say that is most valuable to a team.

The last pitcher to win the MVP award was Justin Verlander in 2011. When comparing the stats, it is clear that Clayton Kershaw's 2014 season is better than Justin Verlander's 2011 MVP season. (Stats via ESPN.com)
While Kershaw pitched in seven less games than Verlander, Kershaw managed to have the same amount of shutouts, three less wins, and eleven less strike outs. While I understand his ERA, WHIP, HR, and BB count could have increased, it would not have been enough to be more than Verlander's.

I believe pitchers should be allowed to win the MVP award. I think Clayton Kershaw will be named the 2014 NL MVP.

What are your thoughts?
