The Day After

" We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children's game, we just don't... don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we're all told." - Scout Barry, Moneyball
Tom Brady is arguable the best to play the quarterback position but if you watched last night's game, it would be hard to believe. At the beginning of the season when Brady was asked when he will retire he responded; "I'll retire when I suck." The amount of messages I received last night telling me to enjoy Brady's last year got me thinking; Tom Brady will not retire at the end of the year. I believe Ray Lewis and Derek Jeter are to thank for that. Big name players will give you warning when they retire and that is why I believe the 2016 season will be Brady's last. I don't believe what happened last night was all Brady's fault. He has no offensive line and is still throwing to mediocre receivers. I'm not trying to make up excuses for Brady's poor play but everyone needs help, including Tom Brady. I believe the Patriots organization screwed up badly. They saw Brady's talent and took advantage of it. If you look at the year Brady had a great receiver, the Patriots were one help catch away from going 19-0. The Patriots saw how Brady could manage to win without paying for the big name receivers and for that they only have 3 rings.

What do the Patriots do from here? They do what they always do, bounce back. I have complete faith in Bill Belichick and Tom Brady because they are a scary duo that can not be predicted.

It's hard to see a positive coming out of last nights game but there were a few:

  1. Rob Gronkowski got another week under his recovery process.
  2. Jimmy Garoppolo looks good for the future.
  3. The Patriots know what to fix now rather than mid-December
It is going to be tough to watch the Patriots play against an undefeated Bengals team fresh off a bye week but all that will mater is if they will be playing football in January.

Monday Morning Thoughts

If a team drafts a Quarterback (QB) in the first round, do they play them week 1 or let them sit and learn?

This weekend we had the opportunity to see Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater start their first NFL game. They were both drafted in the first round in the NFL draft last May, and they both played well this weekend. Every successful team has a successful QB at the helm and is often considered to be the most important position on the field.

When a team drafts a QB in the first round they are investing heavily in them. So why wait on the investment? After watching Bortles and Bridgewater play this weekend, it appears the best move for their teams would have been playing them the first three weeks as well. We have seen many successful first round QBs that started from the get-go: Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, and Matthew Stafford. However, we have also seen a lot of first round QBs that started from game one and it hasn't gone well: JaMarcus Russell (Free Agent aka FA), Mark Sanchez (Backup, Eagles)*, Josh Freeman (FA), Blaine Gabbert (Backup, 49ers)*, Christian Ponder (Backup, Vikings), and Brandon Weeden (Backup, Cowboys)*. While there is no clear answer on what to do with a 1st round QB, I'm bringing this up because there will be talk all week on how teams should not wait on starting their QBs in a win now league. The Browns are the only other team that drafted a QB in the first round this last draft, Johnny Manziel. The Browns may begin to get fans that demand the young talent get the start after this past weekend saw success for the young QBs. There have been some good QBs that had wait their turn. A few QBs that had to wait over a year to get their first start, including non first rounders: Aaron Rodgers, Colin Kaepernick, and Tom Brady. While the list isn't as long, the three of them have very impressive resumes.

I don't have the perfect answer for NFL coaches but I believe that when a team drafts a QB in the first round they don't like their current QB. Why waste time and games playing the guy you don't like? I understand it depends on the team, the player and the situation but in most cases make the change in training camp. Tell the media that you have a QB battle and make the two players duel it out. Regardless of the preseason I believe the team still plays the newly drafted guy and test him out. It gives more time to see how they play in real games, see how they react, and what needs to be improved around the guy.
(* No longer on team that drafted them)

That is my two cents on that topic.
What do you think NFL coaches should do?

Trading Season

It's about that time of the season when people are figuring out how well their teams will perform this season. No team is perfect regardless if you are currently 3-0 and if your league is anything like mine you will notice there isn't much help in the free agency pool. This leaves you with the choice to better your team through trades. I personally hate trading in Fantasy football. Nothing is worse than making a stupid trade and having that be the laughing point of the season. We are going to have our own "Throwback Thursday-Trades". We will look at trades that happened in my league in the past.

  • (2011) Calvin Johnson, and Marques Colston for DeSean Jackson, Mike Tolbert, and Pats D.
  • (2011) Beanie Wells for Victor Cruz (The year Cruz was discovered)
  • (2011) LeSean McCoy for Ryan Fitzpatrick, Johnny Knox and Robert Meachem
  • (2012) Doug Martin for Wes Welker (The next week Doug Martin had 272 yards and 4TDS)
Those were the most notable trades that didn't end so well for some team owners. I'm here to make sure that doesn't happen to you. These are players that you should trade for now and players you should ship off to somebody else.

Real 'em in

Cam Newton
  • He is one of the best players to own in fantasy football when he can move his legs. Entering this season, Newton was a risk choice due to the fact that he didn't have a lot of people to throw to and he was coming off injuries. Well Newton sat out week 1 and is ready to stay for the rest of the year. If you can snag Newton cheap do so before he gains more chemistry with his receivers and is putting up 23+ points every week.
Keenan Allen
  • One of the best wide receivers last year as a rookie. Phillip Rivers hasn't been able to connect much with him early in the season but they did play 2 of the best pass defenses in the first 3 weeks and will be playing against the Jaguars this weekend. Now is your chance to get him cheap before it is too late.
Eddie Lacy
  • This guy was another rookies who was unreal last year. This year I can't say the same but have you seen the Packers. They haven't looked great but that won't last much longer. This year is a year you want running backs. Trust me in 2 weeks you'll wish you would have traded for him while his value was low.
Catch and Release

Emmanuel Sanders
  • I understands that Peyton Manning is throwing to him and that his why his value is so high. Wes Welker came back last week and coming off a bye this week I have a feeling his production will drop. As of right now Peyton has spent a lot of time throwing to Julius Thomas and Sanders but he'll be switching to Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. Trade him before all you can get for him is bench warmers.
Martellus Bennett
  • The guy has been great in a position that doesn't score a lot. The problem here is Bennett but Jay Cutler and the Bears. We all know Cutler is very inconsistent and he has Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery to throw to. In 5 weeks you'll be contemplating picking up a hotter tight end.
Allen Hurns
  • First off I advised against picking him up after week one but if you did, trade him. Blake Bortles is making his 1st career start this week. Hurns is the number two guy on a team with not a lot of hope at the QB position. Something just doesn't feel right here.
The key to fantasy football trading is don't get too attached to players. Once you start naming your team after a player and buying their jersey they will be cemented on your team. Trust me from experience this isn't the best way to go. Look at the stats and the projections not the name. Andre Johnson, and Larry Fitzgerald are great examples. Big names and little production.

Running Backs

Running Backs

There is an obvious lack of running backs on the market right now. With Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson, Eddie Lacy, Matt Forte, Doug Martin, and Frank Gore doing little to nothing fantasy wise. Who do you turn to for your fantasy points and bragging rights? Here are 3 RB's who might be a little under the radar for week 4.

  1.  Khiry Robinson - 18 carries last week is a promising sign. He is playing the cowboys awful defense this week. I would expect around 10 points from him this week.
  2. Lamar Miller - Number one back playing against Oakland? Sign me up.
  3. Matt Asiata - Falcons can't stop the run and now that the clock has struck Teddy Time in Minnesota look for a lot of check down yardage and an increased workload.

In unrelated news I had an awful fantasy week last week which really does ruin Tuesday and Wednesday for me. Hopefully I can put up more than 63 points this week. Lets go Eddie Lacy!

The Minnesota Twins have let me down.

Something has been saddening me for the last month or two now and I think I just hit the nail on the head. The Minnesota Twins. Sure I've been a big fan. Been a big fan since day one. But that's just the point! As of today, I do not consider myself a fan of the Minnesota Twins, and honestly, it's been eating away at me now for months. The Twins were my team. I can still name all the starters from the 2002 roster. I remember game 163. I bought a custom Brian Dozier jersey. Now, whenever I see the Twins tweeting whose up in the bottom of the seventh, I don't even check, and I wish I wanted to. The roster now is unrecognizable. Doug Bernier? A.J. Achter? Future Hall of Famer Joe Mauer, the face of the franchise, is hitting under .280. Trevor May, the supposed future ace of the Twins, is posting an astronomical 8.39 ERA in eight starts. Brian Dozier, the no name 2nd baseman who goes on the represent the organization in the Home Run Derby, hits all but two home runs in the second half of the season. I heard someone describe the Twins as a train wreck, and even then, I thought to myself that that was unfair to the train wreck. At least someone wants to look at a train wreck.  I am disgraced, upset, and sick. I am not a fan of the Minnesota Twins today not because I don't get access to the games, not because I've spent the last month in college, and not because we have yet to see the 'future' in Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano. I am not a fan of the Twins because they are forcing me to look the other way.

    • Phillip Rivers
  • Cowboys over Rams 34-7
    • Demarco Murray

    • Knile Davis
  • Panthers over Steelers 24-10
    • Antonio Brown
  • Bears over Jets 31-17
    • Brandon Marshall
Again don't base anything off these.

The Joy of Injuries

Nothing is worse in the world of fantasy football than sitting on your coach watching one of your players helped of the field. This past week was filled with injuries.

I entered this years draft with the mindset of going for wide receivers. Screw the running backs. I drafted Trent Richardson and Steven Ridley the year before and they gave me nothing but tears and regret. I drafted wide receivers because they are more consistent and look I'm 2-0. Here is the problem had I been fortunate enough to draft AJ Green this article would be a little different. The problem with AJ is he has one of the 3 worst injuries when it comes to fantasy football.
The worst type of injuries:

  • Torn ACL/MCL
  • Concussion
  • Turf toe
The reason turf toe sucks is he will be having issues with it all year now. It's not going to go away quickly. With AJ Green out, I would recommend picking up Mohamed Sanu. Oh and I would like to apologize to anyone who listened to Matthew Berry when he said there is a 75% chance Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall won't play.

Now the reason I hate the running back position.
  • Jamaal Charles
  • Mark Ingram
  • Ryan Matthews
  • Knowshon Moreno
  • Doug Martin
I don't really want to go on a rant here but it's players like this that can or were doing well that end up hurt. Ingram finally looked like a good running back. Charles was a top 3 back. Martin has huge potential and constantly gets hurt. I hate running backs.

Over Reaction Monday

Every Monday I will post some over reactions to the weekends games.

The Saints are finished after an 0-2 start.
The Browns are Contenders.
The Vikings will go 2-14 this year.
My fantasy team will win 8+ games this year.
Eddie Lacy is at best an RB2.
Seattle can't win without the 12th man.
Brandon Marshall is the number one fantasy receiver.
Julian Edelman is a number one receiver in a ppr league.
The Cardinals will win 12 games this year.
Every good player will get hurt / suspended by the end of the year.
The Patriots will now go 15-1 this year after dominating the Vikings.

Understanding the Phenomenon of Fantasy Football

If you are one of the 32 million people (according to Forbes) that play fantasy football, you understand the passion for the game. However, a lot of people don't understand the thrill of a "made up" game.

I love fantasy football because it is a way to isolate myself from the real world. The real world can be a cruel place. Its filled with: war, cancer, natural disasters, poverty, and people constantly telling you "no". It may seem silly that a fantasy game can help me but it can. It gives me something to cheer for, something that helps me get through the long hours of work/school, something I share in common with other people and can talk about at the water cooler. It gives me joy. I may lose every game of the season but I lose to my friends and family.

I just started school at the University of Minnesota and I have many fantasy football leagues. While I'm at college, fantasy football is an awesome way for me to keep in contact with my high school friends. I'm not sure how much we will do together now that everyone is doing their own thing and meeting new people, but at least one day out of the year, all 10 of us will get together.  We will gather for our draft remembering all the stupid stuff we did and get a day to make new memories. We will all go back to our normal lives but every week we still have the smack talk board to make fun of each other like we used to.

Everyone wants to be unique and have control. Take a look at Apple. There is a reason they didn't come out with just 2 different color watch bands. People want to have control and be able to personalize stuff to make it reflect them. In fantasy football you get to personalize your roster. You get to draft people because of personal preference, their name, the team they play for or because they are good. You get to decide what you want. You get to come up with your own team name and logo that's different than anyone else. Your team can reflect you. Then you get to control all aspects of your team. There is nobody telling you who you can and cannot play. There is nobody telling you what your name has to be. You are the boss.

I look forward to the start of the season the minute the Super Bowl is over. Nothing is better than beating your high school friends, boss or even your grandpa. Fantasy football may just seem like a silly game but there is a lot more to it.

Figured I had to copy you Jack on this one

Triple Take Thursday

Every Thursday the plan is for all three of the writers to give their opinion on each game that week and one fantasy player to look out for. I try not to make the overly obvious pick, and dig deep a little.

    • Fantasy Pick Mike Wallace

Life Without Football

Josh Gordon was suspended for the entire 2014 season. Rather than sit around and wait till next year, Gordon became a cars salesman. Yesterday, he made his first sale. I got to thinking "What jobs would other players work if they didn't have football?"

LeSean McCoy
Restaurant Waiter
He has the people skill to handle a wide variety of people. He wouldn't upset anyone. He is the kind of person that will bring people to the establishment because of his special skill. Read this for more on why he is a perfect waiter (https://www.facebook.com/PYTburger/posts/10152744953446477).

Calvin Johnson
Hand Model
I'm going to assume everyone reading this has seen those Apple commercials where the person is holding the Apple product and showing the product's capabilities. Well that guy would be Calvin Johnson (if he didn't play football). I mean have you seen the iPhone 6? Those things are huge. Calvin Johnson has the biggest and best hands in the NFL. Apple could really use a guy like Johnson to model the iPhone 6.

Ray Rice
Headphone Commercial
I think Ray Rice would do well helping out Dr.Dre (soon to be owned by Apple). Ray Rice is the perfect player to represent the Beats brand. He is always fired up. You saw Colin Kaepernick in the Beats commercial but he didn't understand the product like Rice does. End the commercial with, Beats by Ray.

JJ Watt
Secret identity
Now hang with me on this one. The guy is an animal. He is tall, fast and incredibly strong. The guy works out more than I sit on the couch and watch Netflix. The guy is determined. He acts like a very well put gentlemen. He even stated after getting his new contract, " I’m gonna stick with my humble lifestyle and just keep working out." If JJ Watt wasn't playing football, he would be Mr. Incredible. He fits the description perfectly and he even shows some resemblance.

Any other ideas on what player would be doing without football? Leave a comment below.

Fluke or Flounder?

After spending weeks of hard core research preparing for draft day, week 1 makes you feel awful. Well maybe not as bad as others. Week 1 doesn't gives us a real idea of which players will do well this season and which players won't. Week 1 is often times a fluke. Peterson, McCoy, and Charles all did below expectations. Now this could be a sign of a bad season for high draft pick running backs like last year but it could just be a slow start. You also have players that are the "Kevin Ogletrees". If you don't remember who he is, that is my point. He is a guy who went off week 1 in the past for the Cowboys. He was the hot free agent addition but he did nothing the rest of the season...a fluke. The player that I believe will be a fluke this season is Allen Hurns. He played great but that was without Cecil Shorts. When Shorts returns as the #1 WR, you can expect Marqise Lee on the opposite side of him. That leave Hurns the number 3 WR on the Jaguars who aren't consistent and don't have a strong QB. When looking for players via Free Agency you have to look at their history, their situation, and position value. One week doesn't define a player nor does it define a team.

Week 1 Struggles
These are very good QBs that lost week 1 but are aware that one week doesn't define their whole season
  • Drew Brees
  • Tom Brady
  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Andre Luck
  • Philip Rivers
The Moral of the Story
Week 1 isn't a good judgment on players or teams. If you lost, big deal. Your players may not have performed but also know you may have to make some changes. You can fix you roster with trades, free agents, or even your bench, but stop embarrassing yourself. Nothing is worse than starting off the season 0-2.

Sell High, Buy Low

Week one has come and gone, and with it my fantasy dreams yet again. I'm sure there are many people who are looking for an improvement to their team, much like myself. Here are some people that I believe you can either sell for more than they are worth, and some folks you can pick up for cheap. I will avoid the obvious Allen Hurns and focus on other less obvious players.

Sell High

  • Vernon Davis - The big fellow had a 2 TD game, but did so on only 6 targets. The cowboys don't have a good Defense, in fact I'm not sure they have a defense. I believe he will be seeing less targets this year with Crabtree, Boldin, and Johnson as well as a 2 headed monster of a running game in San Fran. If you have another tight end option, see what you can get for him.
  • Mark Ingram - Another 2 TD performer from week 1. Some things to be worried about with Ingram are that he is in a multi-running back system, and was playing against the second worst rush defense from 2013. Shop this former Heisman winner around.
  • Darren Sproles - The 5'6'' 190 pound ball of speed was off to a rough start averaging 2 ypc on his first 10 carries, than busts off 49 yard touchdown. If unreliability is your thing, keep him.

Buy Low

  • Keenan Allen - The offence was committed to throwing to the 2nd year man, looking his way 9 times. He had to go up against arguably the second best corner in the league in Patrick Patterson. Give him one more week though, as next week Richard Sherman and the L.O.B have his number.
  • Eddie Lacy - A mild concussion and a down week have the price low on the former Alabama running back. He played the Seahawks last week in a down week for the whole offence. He should start next week having passed his first part of the concussion protocol the day after the game. See how low you can go for price.
  • Michael Crabtree - Another San Francisco player on this list. The former Biletnikoff Award winner had only 2 receptions on 4 targets for 25 yards last week. That doesn't look promising, but he was hobbled with a bad calf and the 49'ers got off to a rocketing start last week and just simply didn't throw the ball around a lot in the second half. Look for him to get his in the coming weeks.

Watt Could You Buy?

On Sept 2, JJ Watt signed a 6yr/$100million extension with the Texans. After the Texan's win on Sunday he told reporters that he Googled "What do rich people buy?"

Well I got to thinking "What could you buy with $100 million?" Well here is a list of things you could buy

  • 28.5 million boxes of strawberry Pop-Tarts
  • 250K Xbox Ones
  • 14 million 12 packs of Charmin Ultra Toliet Paper
  • 8.3 million Footballs
  • 6,667 Kawasaki Jet Skis
  • 158K 64GB iPad Airs
  • 666K Air Jordan shoes (priced at $150)
  • 23 million 12 packs of Mountain Dew
  • 803K Cats (If you're a cat lady this is perfect)
  • 33 million Toothbrushes

So tell me what would you buy with $100million? Leave a comment below

The Most Thankless Job

How can you absolutely hate a job but look forward to it every year? I have no idea but every year I fall in the trap. If you are a commissioner of a Fantasy Football league you understand my pain. You love playing fantasy football, and getting together with friends but it's because of your friends you hate being a commissioner. As a commissioner you are responsible to pick a draft date and location that works for everyone in the league. After you somehow manage to plan around: John's therapy session, Sam's dance lesson, and Jacob's time of worship,  you still have to monitor the draft to make sure everything goes smoothly. Once all of that is settled the real fun begins; The fantasy football season. Week 1 is days away but wait...what's this...you are still missing money from 2 league members. Matt lost all his money at the casino and Sydney had to pay for her cat to go on the biggest loser. No matter the circumstances you are responsible to get everyone's entry fee. You have to harass them before the first game because who knows if their team does so bad its not worth the entry fee anymore. After the first few games kickoff Michael is upset because he was volunteering at the church and didn't have time to set his line up. He nags you all afternoon to change it for him but it's too late, he shouldn't have been volunteering. While you are dealing with that situation, another member is upset that the league scoring isn't the same as their other 5 leagues. The West Side Wangs (my league I'm commissioner for) does not give points to Adrian Peterson for every broken tackle. I'm sorry but do people not understand what an offseason is? The offseason is a magical time where you have over 6 months, or half a year, to bring up concerns and changes for the next season. Now its week 8, the season is finally in full swing and everything is going well when somebody decides to add complications. The trade deadline is approaching and trade is made. You receive constant messages telling you to put the trade through and messages telling you to veto it ( and nothing is worse than making a trade for yourself and everyone demands you veto your own trade).
To top off all of that, every week you win somebody throws the classic "you are using your powers to cheat". I'm sorry your team is worse than the Oakland Raiders.

If you survive all 16 weeks of being a commissioner I thank you. It is not an easy job and it's really not that fun. You put up with everyones bulls**t all season and for what? You don't get paid. But at the end of the season, after the champion has been crowned, you get the satisfaction of a successful year (maybe not your team but league wise). It's one of the most thankless jobs you could have but it's also the best job you could have.

"You get no love for being a league commissioner. It’s a thankless job" - Kevin MacArthur, The League on FXX

Welcome

Fantasy football. America's favorite sport. Or least favorite, depending on how if they started or benched Knowshon Moreno last week. Millions are glued to their T.V's every Sunday, looking at the ESPN Fantasy Football app and cursing at the Green Bay Packers for letting John Kuhn score the touchdown instead of Eddie Lacy who you drafted in the first round. This is the story of just one league out of the many hundred of thousands of leagues out there.

There are going to be three writers for this blog. All three members of this prestigious league. Myself, Jack, 2011 runner up of the league and undeniably the most informed about rookies.
Wyatt, 2011 champion and 2012 runner up and the earliest to ever draft a kicker.
Khosla, 2013 champion and first ever transfer into the league.

What is special about this league? Why do we need a blog? In short, we don't. We are just doing it anyway. The plan is for semi-daily updates including: Advice from the master Khosla, Waiver Wire Tuesdays, and just stories from the day to day activities in the league.

Stay tuned for more.
